Things I liked about A dance with Dragons
One of the best things about A dance with Dragons is the general story line and setting. The setting is a magical world with very long seasonal cycles and shows kingdoms at the verge of collapse. You’ll get many opinions of the same thing though out A Dance with Dragons because of the unique narration style i.e. point of view narration by eighteen main characters.
Also, since A dance with Dragons is set in a fictitious world, there is very detailed map that allows you to follow the story line as the narration moves from one continent and dynasty to another. This means that a very detailed and accurate mental picture will be formed as you read on.
The storyline is so riveting that it makes A dance with Dragons an instant page turner. The story starts in the desolation present after a war. Queen Daenerys Targaryen of the eastern dynasty rules with the help of three dragons. Irregardless of her power, she has tens of thousands of enemies that are bent on her destruction.
As these forces plan their assault, a lone warrior sets out to find the queen to an entirely different end. Towards the north, there as a character called Jon Snow who helps guard the wall of ice as stone from enemies.
Being a powerful commander, he has equally powerful enemies, both within and without, that he must face. As the story in A dance with Dragons progresses, we see conflicts erupt from all corners is this world i.e. from the priesthood to the nobility to the peasants.
The author has skillfully intertwined these conflicts and betrayals and lead them up to a crescendo that will leave you waiting eagerly for the next installment.
Another thing that will tempt you to buy A dance with Dragons is that it is written by world renowned author George R R Martin. Reading this book will show you that his reputation is well deserved and thus will be money well spent.
Things we did not like about A dance with Dragons
One of the major qualms we had about A dance with Dragons is the size. It is over a thousand pages long meaning that the hard cover version can be quite hard to carry around. Fortunately, the rich story line will compel you to take it with you wherever you go.
Also, there are parts of the A dance with Dragons that get a little clunky and can therefore tempt you to jump over a few pages. Fortunately, these parts are few and far between. This will not happen to most people meaning that A dance with Dragons can have a hold on you from start to finish.
You’ll not fully appreciate A dance with Dragons unless you have read all the preceding installments. Fortunately, these other books are easily available. You’ll also be able to read A dance with Dragons and easily combine it with preceding and subsequent installments below.
